AHNU
James Crawford, now known as “Ahnu,” describes his music as being “real” and “speaking life.” His ministry is delivered in a hip hop format and seeks to reach people right where they are. Some people view the church as being no fun and full of those who condemn others who are not a part of the church, but Ahnu says that we can still have fun….in Christ!

            From the age of seven years old, Ahnu was mesmerized by the beats, dancing, stage presence and delivery of the late, great King of Pop, the one and only… Michael Jackson. He was also influenced by groups like Run DMC, who were not afraid to rap to different types of music, like rock and roll. They were bold enough to do new things and their message was positive, without the cursing and hardline lyrics that characterized other groups during this time. Ahnu was also influenced by the smooth flow and clean lyrics of rap legend, Curtis Blow. 

            Ahnu considers his style to be a mix of the word play of Mos Def (using metaphors and similes), the delivery of Jay Z, and the revolutionary flair of Naz. He plans to capture his audience with driving beats and secular sounding music, then hit them with life changing, inspirational lyrics.

            From Kindergarten through 8^th grade, Ahnu was educated in Catholic schools; however, upon leaving that environment, his life changed and he moved away from the conservative teachings to a more street wise persona. After several troubled years, Ahnu gave his life to Christ in the mid-90’s, but he worried about having to give up his love of rhyming and hip hop music. His pastor at the time wisely advised him that Ahnu would not have to give up rhyming…. He would just need to change what he was rhyming about!

            What can we expect to hear from Ahnu in the near future? He is currently working on a full-length CD and also a mix-CD that he plans to give away to the public to introduce listeners to his versatile sound that God has blessed him with. Ahnu says he can rhyme about Christ to ANY type of music – hip hop, rock, gospel, street beats…. And even blue grass! By doing so, Ahnu wants to show the world that this type of inspirational music can be the best music out there; it’s universal and can be played in all places…. From the church to the club, because the music knows no color or culture boundaries, and the message is inherently good.
